JESUS IS THE CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD

What Does It Mean That Jesus Is “The Only Begotten?”

Why is Jesus Christ the only begotten Son of God? Who told God He could have only one Son? Is there a higher power than God that creates rules for God?

This is a good example of a loaded question – though it may appear as a genuine inquiry, it carries an inherent bias and possibly aims to shake the faith of a Christian. It is crucial that we identify these type of questions, shed light on their faulty assumptions, and respond with clarity and conviction. I hope you find my answer, or at least certain aspects of it, useful as you encounter similar questions.

WHY IS JESUS CHRIST THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD?

The phrase “only begotten Son” occurs in John 3:16, which reads in the KJV as “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

THE ONLY ‘BEGOTTEN’ ACCORDING TO MERRIAM-WEBSTER?

“Begotten” is an archaic term defined by dictionaries as “generated” or “produced” as an offspring or a child. This definition has sparked debates among individuals who argue that calling Jesus Christ the only Son of God is not entirely accurate because we are all God’s begotten children, tracing back from Adam (Luke 3:38) to all believers that are led by the Spirit of God (Romans 8:14). In an attempt to address this, some newer translations have replaced “only begotten Son” with “one and only son” for clarity, but the debate remains unresolved.

False teachers and cults have latched onto this phrase suggesting that Jesus Christ is a created being and not God. We know the Bible was not written in English, and therefore we must not base our theology on a word which could have been translated poorly.

THE REAL MEANING OF THE ONLY ‘BEGOTTEN’

The Greek word used here is Monogenes (μονογενής) which means “pertaining to being the only one or unique of its kind.” So the question arises. What makes Jesus Christ unique – and one and only? The answer lies is God’s Word, not in human speculation.

Philippians 2:5–8: explains the uniqueness of our Lord Jesus Christ : “Who, being in the form of God… made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.”

Neither Adam (Luke 3:38) nor the believers who are led by the Spirt (Romans 8:14) existed in the form of God before their creation. There is none like our Lord Jesus Christ. He was the Word in the beginning, He was with God and was God, and He became flesh and tabernacled among us. There never was and never will be anyone like our Lord.

However, the question of what makes Jesus the “only begotten Son” is only the beginning. It is crucial to delve deeper and ask why. Why did the Son of God become man and die on the Cross? The answer to this profound question holds the power to transform lives. Lord Jesus Christ came to give His life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45), and whosoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life (John 6:47, John 3:16).

The remaining two questions, although perfunctory and lacking the same level of significance, can still be addressed for those of us who are interested in tackling them.

IS THERE A HIGHER POWER THAN GOD THAT CREATES RULES FOR GOD?

Absolutely not. Our God is the ultimate authority and the sovereign creator of all things and is accountable to none. He reigns supreme, unrivaled by any force or entity and His sovereignty cannot be confined or hindered by anyone.

Isaiah 40:22 – It is he that sits upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretches out the heavens as a curtain, and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in.
Romans 11:36 – For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

WHO TOLD GOD THAT HE COULD HAVE ONLY ONE SON?

No one has the audacity to instruct or dictate to the Almighty on what to do. .
As Psalm 115:3 declares, “Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.

Who made God?

During a conference Q&A session, a boy about ten years of age asked “Sir, if God made us, then who made God?” The preacher, mindful that it was a young child, gave a simple answer. “Well, he said, if someone made God , then he would have to be a bigger God, right?
The boy replied “Yes sir”
The preacher continued : But then you’d have a problem – who made the bigger God? Then it would be a bigger, bigger God. Right? And who made the bigger bigger God”. The boy understood.
We could keep going on with bigger and bigger and bigger and bigger forever for infinity. The only thing that makes sense is to have the biggest God of all – the infinite, the eternal God of the Bible.

“Greater than God” Riddle

“What is greater than God, more evil than the devil, the poor have it, the rich don’t need it and if you eat it, you will die.’ The answer to the profound riddle is remarkably straightforward : NOTHING.
Nothing is greater than God, nothing is more evil than the devil, the poor have nothing and the rich don’t need nothing and if you eat nothing you will die
